Why Self-Care Matters at Home and at Work

On January 1, 2018, I decided that my New Year’s resolution would be self-care. And, my life has improved ever since.

2017 was a year completely focused on planning my wedding—from food choices to table charts, the majority of wedding planning ironically ended up being about everyone else, but myself. So, I needed this year to be about caring for my health and well-being. I resolved to focus 2018 on doing things that brought me happiness, balance, peace and joy in my personal life and in my career.

So far, so good! With 2018 about a quarter of the way done, I’ve been able to successfully dedicate my new year to selfcare, and I’ve learned a few things about why self-care is not only important at home, but also at work:

Infuses Energy – Self-care tactics like getting a massage or setting aside two hours during your week for complete solitude, can give us the extra energy our minds and bodies need to achieve our goals for that week, month or year.

Keeps You Focused – If you don’t care for yourself wholly—mind, body, and soul—you are likely going to lose your focus and drive in your job. If you’re like me, and absolutely love what you do, losing focus just isn’t an option. So, on Sunday night take a very long, hot bubble bath with essential oils and candles lit all around you because your career needs you come Monday morning.

Promotes Positivity – How can you be bubbly and happy if you are utterly exhausted—emotionally and physically? You can’t. That’s why you absolutely, no questions asked, need self-care in your daily life. Without putting yourself first, you could become a negative, closed-minded person that no one wants to be around. A quick nap on a Saturday afternoon or going to bed an hour early each night will breath more positivity into your life.

Improves Productivity – Now that you have energy, focus, and positivity, allowing yourself to indulge in self-care has paved the way for productivity! That manicure, nature walk, nap, episode of “Friends” or whatever activity brings your “self” happiness has given you the ability to be more productive in your home life and work life. So, conquer that extra home improvement project or go above and beyond for that extra client at work; you can do it!

Helps Others – I’m sure you’ve heard these popular quotes: “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first” and “Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve other from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” Live by these at home and at the office.

I hope you will consider taking some time out of your hectic life to put yourself first in 2018 and get the self-care you deserve!
